Bachelor of Theology

This program aims to provide an overall vision of the Catholic Christian theological tradition. The general academic objective of this program is to foster critical thinking and to provide a basic theological culture with an overview of Scriptures, the main currents in the history of Christianity, and fundamental questions related to Christian doctrines and practices.

Spread over four years, it involves three major themes:

1. God and the human being;
2. Jesus Christ and Christian existence; and
3. the Christian community and commitment.

Particular attention is given to develop a theoretical and practical knowledge of methods and scientific approaches in various theological subject areas (exegesis, history, ethics and reflective theology). Course examples include Christology, Theological Anthropology, History of Early Christianity, Social and Political Commitment of Christians, among many others. Students in this program will be put in touch with primary and secondary theological sources in order to assess their contribution to the history and evolution of ideas throughout the Western tradition. Direct access to primary sources is encouraged through the study of ancient languages.

In Summary

The Bachelor of Theology - B.Th. is a four year program, 120 credits for student coming directly from high school, a 90 credit program for students who have completed a DÉC (Diplôme d’études collégiales) in Québec or at least one university year. Student coming directly from high school can complete the 30 extra credits either with the Transition program or Elective courses.

The Theology Faculty of Dominican University College is also a Canonical Faculty that can grant ecclesiastic degrees to the following conditions:

• A formation in Philosophy equivalent to one year
• A sufficient knowledge of Latin (Even though the knowledge of Greek is a requirement only for ecclesiastical) 

A word about your studies in theology

Theology is meaningful and flexible. Surveys have shown that theology students go on to work intensely satisfying careers. Job options for theology majors are diverse. Many of our graduate end up in careers that are indirectly related to theology, such as education, chaplaincy, counselling, or social work.
