Why Study Philosophy at DUC?

The study of philosophy is central to the mission of the university. DUC is one of the few specialized universities in Canada which concentrates in the history of philosophy and metaphysics. The diversity of the intellectual life of the Faculty allows for highly focused and individualized programs of study. Our small class sizes encourage passionate discussion. An emphasis on critical thinking fosters the ability to form sound arguments. Reading the original works of philosophers rather than secondary sources equips students with a unique background in the discipline.

Philosophy helps you question your beliefs in order to build stronger answers. This, in turn, leads to better choices and more beautiful human living. Whether it is in politics or ethics, history or economics, philosophy provides the tools to penetrate to the foundations of thinking, and then to offer new perspectives. Training in philosophy will help you read critically and communicate clearly, skills that are in very high-demand today.

More fundamentally, philosophical training helps you develop your own worldview and offer grounded reasons for your beliefs. Structuring your thought process and thinking through what’s important in life will provide you with greater confidence and widen your perspective.

What Will You Do with Your Philosophy Degree?

This is the dreaded question for every philosophy major. There are some very interesting answers that can equip you for success. Though an ability to ask better questions is important in the pursuit of human freedom and happiness, its practical implications are becoming increasingly evident.   • Recherchers, analysts, advisors (Human Rights, social policy, government, NGOs)
