To appraise the sorrowfulness of Jesus proved to be a fruitful challenge for several theologies of Incarnation, Martyrdom and Passion, especially in the West. This seminar will investigate the manifold reception of the words of Christ at Gethsemane: ‘’My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death’’ (MK 14:34), by Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, Thomas More and John Henry Newman.
